Week of December 20 - 24: Lesson Objectives and Assignments

Lesson Objectives for the week.
1) Assess weekly vocab and writing via online quiz scheduled for Sun Dec 20th
2) Collect Journal #2
3) Introduce Research Report project.
4) Choose research report topic.
5) Read and analyze model research report.
6) Create and answer researchable questions to narrow down topic.
7) Practice taking notes, paraphrasing, and summarizing.
8) Practice Documenting Information using source cards
9) Begin research on selected topic
10) Complete Vocabulary Unit 7A-B-C and write original sentences 


Homework due Thursday Dec 24, 2009:
1) Research Report Pre-writes 
2) Voc7ABC and sentences
3) Taking notes, paraphrasing, and summarizing worksheet.


Homework due Sunday Jan 3, 2010:
1) Voc 7D and Definitions
2) Use source cards to take notes, paraphrase, and summarize from atleast 3 different sources.


Intro to Research Report, Prewrite Worksheets, Source Card Worksheets, and Taking Notes Worksheets as well as information on how to access Sunday's quiz will also be emailed to you.

Grade 11 English Language Assignment Updates


Hello! (again)

I really do miss you in hallways and classes :(

Here is an update on what you still need to finish this week.  I will be sending you an email by Thursday regarding what we will be doing next week. 

1) Go to www.skype.com and create an account.  Once you have created an account please add me to your account.  My account name is rasha.ghappour   This will count as a homework grade.  Marks will be deducted if you have not done so by TOMORROW!

2) Your final persuasive essay is due tomorrow, Wed. Dec. 16th.  It should be emailed to me by 3pm.

3) Your compare and contrast pre-write and essay is due on Thursday Dec. 18th. Remember this is a short 4 paragraph essay and will be graded as a draft.  

4) Vocan 6D and the definitions are due on Thursday Dec. 18th.  Please type and email.  I will be emailing you the answers once you have submitted the homework.

5) Journal #2 is due on Sunday Dec. 20th.

6) We will have a quiz during the scheduled time on Sunday Dec. 20th covering Voc 6D and compare and contrast.  More information will follow regarding the quiz.

Remember you have known about these assignments / due dates since the beginning of the week.

Lesson 2:  Assessment of Voc 6ABC and Literary Analysis Structure;  Introduce Compare and Contrast  Assignment; Read and Analyze Sample Compare and Contrast Essay and Review Standards, Structure, and Forms of Organization for Writing Lit Analysis (LN ch. 20)

Lesson 3: Consider and discuss main ideas, opinions, likes, dislikes of selected literary piece (Sermon from Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God by Jonathan Edwards); Discuss how to support main ideas and opinions from the text; Write thesis statement and outline for literary analysis (complete prewrite)
Lesson 4: Correct Vocab.  Complete prewriting worksheets for literary analysis; write literary analysis of selected piece and submit for grading.

Term 1 Test - Monday Dec. 7th, 2009

Your English Language term test is a 30 minute comprehensive assessment covering the following topics:

-  Vocabulary:  Wordskills Units 1-2-3-5

-  Grammar:  Writing Effective Sentences; Parts of Speech (revision chapter); Parts of the Sentence (ch.1); Using Verbs (ch.4); Subject Verb Agreement (ch.5)

- Writing:  The Writing Process; The Writing Variables; Patterns of Organization; Effective Introductions and Conclusions; Types of Paragraphs; Elaboration; Citation; Reading Comprehension

The questions on the test will be in the form of multiple choice, true/false, fill in the blanks, and matching.

Late Assignments and Re-Exams

Please note that if you have not yet handed in the term test, sentences for voc unit 3, or the sentence parts notes and exercises you have until Saturday Nov. 14th to submit the work for 75% of the grade and Monday Nov. 16th to submit it for 50% of the grade.  No late work will be accepted after Monday Nov. 16th.

A reminder that extra credit assignments (which many of you need) are due today Wed. Nov. 11th.  They will not be accepted after midnight tonight.

For those students who have been notified that they must take a re-exam, the test will be held in my classroom on Sunday during the break.

Assignment Due Dates for the Week of Nov. 8th

For my beautiful 11th graders who feel lost ...


First of all I have to say that I am very proud of how you guys are keeping up with your work.  For those who are lost, I'm still proud at the attempts that you are making :)

Here is a checklist of everything that is due for English Language until we go back to school (isA).  I hope this helps those who are still a bit confused about what to do.

Term 1 Journal Topics

1) I will attach the term test and the grammar sheets to my blog tonight (or tomorrow morning). Just click the link to them and the documents will open. Just save as and add your name to the name of the file, complete, and EMAIL it back to me.

2) You can send me all assignments via EMAIL to rasha_ghappour@yahoo.com. Please attach documents as opposed to copying and pasting into emails.

3) You may do all 6 extra credit assignments if you want. They are to make up for any assignments missed or those you may have done poorly in. However, if you already have 100% on HW, I can't give you more than an extra 5% for extra credit.

4) Journal topics will be posted under their own title . . . yes, they are due when we get back, but if you want to get them out of the way I'd be happy to receive them via email.

4) Create a diagram or an outline listing the thesis statement and main ideas in the composition presented on p.318 of your text book. Add 3 ideas for new paragraphs that would support the thesis. See p. 324 for help.

5) Complete the Practice on p.329 of your text.

6) Complete the Practice on p. 341 of your text.
